Displaying an
enormous collection of arms and artillery weapons
from the Middle Ages to the present day, this
museum is located just across a narrow canal from
the Peter and Paul Fortress. It is a great
place to visit with your kids: they will
particularly enjoy the open air exhibition of
artillery and missile launchers in the museum's
yard. Inside one will find a slightly
old-fashioned collection of military memorabilia,
temporary exhibitions, a nice little shop stocked
with models of weapons and miniature soldiers and
a cafe.
This summer a
temporary exhibit presents "The Attack" - a
terrific painting by V. Vereschagin, one of
Russia's leading artists of the late 19th
century. While being a military artist,
Vereschagin remained a staunch pacifist and
introduced the general public to the horrors of
war. His "Attack" was painted in 1881 and
reflected an episode of the third storming of
Plevna, a Turkish fort in Bulgaria.
