Gala concerts of world musical classics starts at the Mariinsky Theater with opera “The Flying
Dutchman” by Wagner. Its Jan. 20 premiere (conductor — Valery Gergiev) falls on the second
night of the scheduled Shalyapin Festival. Most of the festival's 20 performances will be
closed to the heart of Shalyapin's musical artistry ("Boris Godunov" given at both the
Mariinsky Theater and the St.Petersburg-Opera). The festival features performances by the
Mussorgsky Theater of Opera and Ballet,
the St.Petersburg State Capella
and the St.Petersburg Philharmonic and will host a number of internationally acclaimed basses.
